Eve lay, watching her father in the stark moonlight. His breathing had become more labored and he could barely lift his head. She touched his clammy forehead. He opened his eyes wide and mouthed, “I love you. Always.” She heard his words in her heart and then she realized what was coming. No.

Rising to her knees, she silently called to him, ‘No! Don’t leave me.’

Sudden blood gushed from his lips. She sprang back to avoid it. Her father gurgled, trying to speak.

And then he was gone. She knew it before she touched his throat to feel for a pulse.

Shock shimmered through her. Her father had left her. She sensed movement near her.

“Is he...?” Rafe asked in a swift whisper, a gentle whisper.

She could only nod, holding in the sobs.

Rising from the ground, he came to her, drew her to her feet, and put an arm around her tentatively as if he expected her to pull away.

She turned toward him and rested her cheek against his buckskin shirt.

“Go ahead,” he murmured next to her ear.

She muffled her sobs against him. The one person who had truly known her and always loved her had slipped beyond her reach. In this moment she thanked God for such a father. But she also knew what she must now face: a life without him, a life in a strange land. She clung to Raphael McKuen, another man she could trust. But she mourned, “Father, Father...”
